At the request of parents, school crossing guards, and the Transportation Safety Committee, the Department of Public Works recently installed several signs near Pollard Middle School on Harris Avenue, Mayo Avenue, and Pinewood Road to advise drivers of new turn restrictions from 7-8 am and from 2-3 pm when school is in session.
During these restricted times, U-turns and left turns through the Harris Avenue median will not be permitted at Mayo Avenue and Pinewood Road. This new configuration will increase pedestrian safety by limiting the number of directions from which drivers can approach the intersections, allowing crossing guards to focus on the primary crossing approaches and escorting children safely through the median crosswalks.
Residents who need to turn around during school drop-off and pickup may do so at Stevens Road, at Bradford Street, or at Eaton Road on either end of the school zone. School buses will be exempt from the restrictions and allowed to turn left onto Pinewood Road.
The new traffic signs are covered but will be visible before the first day of school in Needham, on Wednesday, August 27th.
