Open Burning Season

Burning Season for 2025 has ended.  Information for 2026 will be posted in January.
 Burning Season (January 15 - May 1) 

Permits are available for purchase for $10 at the NFD, 88 Chestnut Street. Payment is by cash or check only. The NFD has the right to prohibit burning on certain days due to weather conditions. DFS Burning Safety Tips

Burning must take place:

  • At a location greater than 25 feet from any dwelling
  • Between 10am and 4pm

Burning the following materials is allowed with a permit:

  • Brush, cane, driftwood, and forestry debris from other than commercial or industrial land clearing operations.
  • Agricultural materials such as fruit tree and brush clippings, raspberry stalks, and infected bee hives for disease control
  • Trees and brush resulting from agricultural land clearing
  • Fungus infected elm wood if no other acceptable means of disposal

Burning the following materials is prohibited:

  • Grass, hay, leaves, stumps
  • Tires
  • Construction material and debris

Please note that you must stay at the burning stie with a charged hose at all times and burning can only take place on days when the air quality is good to ensure smoke will be well dispersed. Ince you receive your permit, you must call NFD  at 781-444-0142 to inquire about the air quality and to get permission to burn.
