Fall & Spring Yard Clean Up

Residents and landscapers who typically work on fall and spring yard clean-ups are reminded that landscape materials should not be dumped near or on conservation and wetland areas. However innocuous it may seem, dumping alters the ecology and chemistry of wetland resources and downstream waterways. Over time, this decreases the ability of the wetland to provide flood storage, trap pollutants, and provide wildlife habitat and can negatively affect water quality.

Property within 100 feet of wetlands and intermittent streams, or within 200 feet of perennial streams (regardless of ownership), is protected under the Massachusetts Wetlands Protection Act (MGL Chapter 131 Section 40) and the Needham General Wetlands Protection By-Law (Article 6). Please be advised that unpermitted disposal of debris within wetlands or buffer zones (including the dumping of landscape materials) may result in the issuance of an Enforcement Order and fines of up to $200 per day per violation. Yard waste should be disposed of at the Town’s Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS), where it can be composted or have your landscaper dispose of it properly.

If you have any questions, or if you see contractors or neighbors dumping in these areas, please email the Conservation Commission or by phone at 781-455-7550 extension 72222. If you are considering work or alterations (i.e. construction, grading, removal of vegetation, etc.) in any of these areas, the law requires that you file an application for such work with the Conservation Commission. Additional information, including regulations and links to the State regulations and forms, is available under the Conservation Department on the Town’s web site.

The Town's Recycling and Transfer Station has designated areas for leaves and grass and areas for brush, branches and sticks to make it easy for residents to dispose of these items during regular hours throughout the year. Separate your leaves and grass from sticks, brush and branches by placing them in separate bags or containers. Throughout November, the RTS offers “Leaf Sundays” from 10am till 4pm for leaves only; no other materials are accepted. Thank you for your understanding and attention to this matter
