About the Training Hub

The North Central & MetroWest Local Public Health Training Hub (NCMWTH) a part of the Public Health Workforce Development program developed by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. The NCMWTH serves 43 communities across 5 Shared Services arrangements and 3 Health Departments that do not currently participate in a Shared Service arrangement. All communities served by this Training Hub are listed below. The goal of the Training Hubs is to ensure the local public health workforce across Massachusetts is meeting the Workforce Standards as outlined in the Blueprint for Public Health Excellence, which includes expanding skills, capacity, and expertise.

Trainings Hubs administer trainings in several fields of local public health, such as food safety and housing. Trainings are delivered in a 3-tiered model that includes self-paced online education, in-depth classroom sessions, and hands-on applied field experience. Each tier focuses on providing context, building competency, and expanding expertise to ensure all trainees who complete the program are ready to administer effective public health services to the communities they serve.

Program Structure

Tier 1: Foundational Knowledge

• Asynchronous online learning administered through TRAIN MA and other platforms.
• Opportunity to for trainees to develop baseline knowledge on their own time.

Tier 2: Intensive Training

• In-person and virtual instructor-led classroom trainings
• Builds upon knowledge gained in Tier 1
• Opportunity for trainees to expand knowledge in preparation for real-time public health scenarios.

Tier 3: Applied Practice

• Hands-on experience for carrying out real-time public health job duties, such as inspections.
• Facilitated alongside Trainer with a feedback assessment at the end.
• Opportunity for trainees to build skills and expertise.
