Household Hazardous Waste Day 2022 Guidelines

 Please review new guidelines in place for 2022 HHW Day event

  • Waste will only be accepted from pickup truck beds, trunks and the back of SUVs (Clean Harbors staff will not accept any material from the seats of vehicles or materials handed to us from residents) 
  • Clean Harbors will not return any containers – this includes but is not limited to gas containers and storage totes 
  • Any resident who attempts to or exits a car will be asked to leave
  • Residents are expected to wear a mask at drop off

The town sponsors one Household Hazardous Waste collection event each year for all Needham residents at no charge. A driver’s license or RTS disposal sticker are required as proof of residency. No materials will be accepted from commercial operations.

The Town of Needham has also entered into reciprocal agreements with 12 other local municipalities for Household Hazardous Waste collection. A fee will be assessed when bringing hazardous waste to a town where you are not a resident. Please view the details here: Reciprocal Household Hazardous Waste Locations (PDF)

Paint and related products ARE NOT accepted at the same location as the HHW event. All residents may bring paint and related products to the October Paint Collection event held on the 3rd Saturday of the month (October 16th) at the Recycling & Transfer Station (RTS). RTS subscribers may bring paint to any collection day indicated below.

2021 Paint Collection

WHEN: 3rd Saturday of the month, April to October 2021

WHERE: Recycling and Transfer Station (RTS), 1421 Central Avenue

Most paint is not hazardous and can be safely disposed of with regular household trash. Please review information on what to bring before bringing paint to a paint collection event.

Examples of Items to Bring to the Household Hazardous Waste Day

Small quantities of products that in normal usage are disposed of in the trash or down the drain do not need to be brought to a HHW event for disposal if disposed of as intended.

  • Acids
  • Air conditioning refrigerant
  • Anti-freeze (bring to RTS)
  • Artist supplies (large quantities)
  • Asbestos (must dampened also double wrapped in heavy duty contractors bag)
  • Bleach cleaner (large quantities)
  • Brake and transmission fluid
  • Car batteries (bring to RTS)
  • Chemistry kits (labeled toxic)
  • De-greaser
  • Driveway sealer
  • Fertilizer (large quantities)
  • Fuel / gasoline / kerosene
  • Furniture polish
  • Gas or small propane cylinders (less than 20 pounds)
  • Herbicides
  • Lighter fluid
  • Mineral spirits - used or not in original container
  • Mothballs
  • Oven cleaner
  • Paint thinner - Used or not in original container
  • Pesticides
  • Photography chemicals
  • Pool chemicals
  • Rodent killers
  • Roofing tar
